In my last newsletter, I wondered which childhood activity I would resurrect next after facilitating Adult Field Trips and Creative Show & Tell. Turns out it’s Summer Break. I’ve always loved the change of seasons, especially into summer and fall. One of my favorite summers growing up was going to a camp between 10th and 11th grade where we lived in a college dorm for three weeks and selected from a series of amazing classes. I took poetry, experimental psychology, and dream analysis. It’s honestly when I started to realize learning could be fun. I would love to do it again as an adult. Runner up was when I spent half the summer beating Mario Bros. 1, 2 & 3. Even as an adult, summer at work has a slightly lighter, breezier tone. Really the only summers that weren’t as cool were those elementary years of parenting where we had a different camp and new pick-up/drop-off locations/times to remember each week. Planning it for five months leading in wasn’t that chill either. A change in seasons and routines can be a great creativity booster. It helps you drum up new ideas, see things in a new way, or take a break from something dragging. There are of course ways to initiate change other than waiting for seasons to pass, but why not take advantage of the obvious times. Summer can also mean lots of travel and visitors, which is why Creative Sunday will be taking Summer Break in July and August (read on for a lovely alternative though). For others traveling without young kids: Airplanes can be amazing, distraction-free creative sanctuaries, and road trips are amazing for audio books, podcast series, and full album listening.
