Creativity and social change overlap in a variety of ways. Sometimes art and creativity are a direct call for change and resistance. We can all think of countless examples. Sometimes art and creativity are a needed escape from the realities of the world. Sometimes art and creativity provide the fuel to energize us out of despair and into action. Ideally right now, as many people as possible are resisting to the edge of their comfort zone. That edge will look different for everyone—and I am not talking about the edge being burnout. Protect your energy. But we all have our part to play, especially now. What is your edge? What are your gifts? What is your approach? What are your values? Who are your leaders? Wading through overwhelm and paralysis (their strategy is effective), I have been thinking a lot lately about my edge, gifts, approaches, values and leaders. I know my approach does not include being overly vocal or engaging in debates on social media, getting willfully arrested, and safe to say I’ll probably never run for office—but I am grateful for those who wear those hats. My gifts are: raising a compassionate, conscious child; staying informed through leaders/outlets I respect, showing up at marches, donating money to causes that are important to me, and helping people activate their creativity.
